Mani Mon: Pastel Party

IMG_20130819_162051_wmHappy Monday, dolls! As the summer comes to an end, I realized I had a few [new] pieces I still hadn’t worn. One piece in particular was a pair of neon pastel coral jeans I bought earlier this summer. I’m not big on OOTDs but since I made a special point to tie my outfit and nails together I’ll share both.

For this look I used two pastels and a glitter because, let’s be honest, I’m addicted to glitter.

IMG_20130819_162201_wmI used Coral Silk from Cover Girl on my pinky – which I have to admit I REALLY liked this time. I didn’t like it the first time I used it for my ombre nails. Check it out here on my thumb. I used Gelato in Venice by Julie G (y’all know I’m obsessed with her line) on my first 3 fingers and on my toes. Finally, I added A Star is Born from Julie G on my ring finger without color underneath. I wanted a pop of glam and I thought the silver glitter was a nice touch.

Here is the outfit.

IMG_20130819_163414_wmI thought the lavender top might be way too off so I tied a pastel multi-colored belt around my waist to bring it all together.

Recap – New York Fashion Week: The Curly Edition

Pictures. Pictures. Pictures.

New York Fashion Week is one of the most highly anticipated fashion extravaganzas in the world. Designers, models and fashion connoisseurs from around the world come here to view the newest fashion trends. I’ve never been interested in NYFW (although fashion does interest me) but this year I decided to hit the town. I hit three events – none “fashion” per se but I had an amazing time celebrating NYFW the curly way.

NYFW is officially kicked off by Fashion’s Night Out. There are tons of events and parties in the city. High end department stores are known for their huge parties and celebrity guests. Kim Kardashian celebrated at Lord & Taylor this year and last. And, Solange (my and every curly’s hair and style icon) was on the 1s and 2s at DVF.

FNO – 9/6 | Natural’s Night Out, Chic N Kinky

On Fashion’s Night Out, I attended Naturals Night Out hosted by Chic N Kinky. I was supposed to attend two other events that night but it didn’t happen. *shrug* While I didn’t make my other events I did enjoy this event because I was able to mix and mingle with other naturals including two college friends and some other naturalistas I’ve met at other events throughout the city. Everyone was definitely fashionable. I was glad I broke out the neon! CharyJay and Jenell were special guests and a few other bloggers and vloggers were there, too.

What I Wore: Black Peplum Top – Target, Neon Green Pencil Skirt – Target, Leopard Print Belt – F21, Snake Print Heels – Zappos, Black Quilted Leather Purse – Burberry, Julep Maven Nails – Gloria, Hair – Chary Jay Inspired Textured Updo.

9/7 | Natural Blogger Meet & Greet, Jenell & CharyJay

That Friday I attended the Natural Bloggers Meet & Greet hosted by Chary Jay of and Jenell of (both ladies are also on YouTube). The event was a lot of fun, the hostesses kept us entertained with a scavenger hunt, awards for best hair, outfit and accessories and tons of giveaways (of course I won one). I had a great time with my gorgeous fellow BLMGirl Cherrie of Each attendee left with samples from Shea Moisture, Entwine Couture, Original Moxie, Nothing But and Karen’s Body Beautiful. Special Guests: Sunshine of, Julian of, Jonna of and Sherry Blossom of

What I Wore: Hi/Low Red Ruched Top – Target, Black Shiny Leggings – American Apparel, Leopard Print Sandals – Beverly Feldman, Julep Maven Nails – Gloria, Black Quilted Leather Purse – Burberry, Hair – Pinned Back Twist Out

9/12 | Ready-To-Hair, curlBOX at Ouidad NYC

I ended my Fashion Week festivities with the curlBOX invite-only private event at the Ouidad Salon the following Wednesday night. I am so thankful to Myleik for thinking of me! When I got the invitation I knew I had to take my mom who’s transitioning. Ouidad debuted two of their new products: Curl Co-Wash and Mongongo Oil. Each attendee got a one-on-one personal hair consultation with a Ouidad Stylist. There were passed hor d’oeuvres, champagne, wine, desserts and a wonderful vibe and atmosphere. As if all of that wasn’t enough, each guest received a full size bottle of both Ouidad products as their parting gift. Amazing night. Amazing company. And, amazing way to end my first NYFW.

What I Wore: Black Lace Dress – Target, Black Stockings, Navy Blue Suede & Black Patent Leather Ankle Strap Pumps – Me Too, Black Quilted Leather Purse – Burberry, Sally Hansen Nails – Green with Envy Hair, Twisted Updo.

$1 Old Navy Flip Flops!!!

Hi, dolls! Just wanted to let you all know that this weekend Old Navy is having their $1 flip flop sale. So, if you love flip flops as much as I do, make sure you head over early! xoxo

Forgotten Fashion Accessory: The Scarf

Recently after brunch with my mom and sister, on our way to the NY Botanical Garden we stumbled upon an amazing boutique, Diana Warren that had the cutest clothes and accessories, including scarves. Vibrant beautiful colors that were handmade by women in Africa. While I definitely didn’t need another scarf, after learning that the proceeds go to fashionABLE* to help these women, I had to buy one. I bought the Meselu Infinity in raspberry. After talking to Diana about the organization and what they do, I felt much better knowing that my unnecessary purchase was very necessary and more than just another scarf to add to my collection.

I hope you both enjoyed and are inspired by this post. Do you love scarves? What’s your favorite charity or organization? Please share below.

50+% OFF!

I don’t know if you’ve noticed but I LOVE saving money. Last weekend I visited some family in Charleston and I hit Tanger Outlets. I got there late so I only visited a few stores. I did, however, find a great deal at Old Navy. I got these 3 t-shirts for only $4 each! The original price for each t-shirt was $8.95 so I was very happy.

I picked up baby blue, lavender and orange (they look a little darker in the picture than in person). I chose these vibrant colors since color blocking has been so trendy this spring and summer.

If you visit a Tanger Outlet check out Old Navy for these tees and their other great sales. When’s the last time you shopped at Old Navy?

THEE Goodwill Outlet

I recently had my first thrifting experience, I took a trip to the Goodwill Outlet. I had heard so much about thrifting from my favorite bloggers and vloggers and I wondered if I, too, would like it. So on a Friday afternoon with one of my law school besties in tow we made our way to the Goodwill Outlet located at 47-47 Van Dam Street in Long Island City, NY. I had passed it so many times to and from the city and never noticed it!

I didn’t know what to expect but when I got there I quickly realized how real it (thrifting) gets. Lol. Even though it was relatively empty since it was mid-day on a Friday a few of the customers maneuvered through the aisles with family members, each pushing an overflowing shopping cart. The huge warehouse was comprised of aisles of bins. Inside the bins were a mixture of men, women and children’s clothing. Nothing was sorted by sex or size which can be annoying so patience was a must.

I found 3 great pieces: a black twill skirt, a black J. Crew jacket and a gray Ralph Lauren blazer. Below are pictures of the items I purchased for $3.75. Yes! $3.75. I also bought 3 books because they were for 3 for $1.00.

Thrift Tips:
1. Wear comfortable clothes. Form-fitting garments like leggings and spandex tops (which can be worn under a long/oversized sweater) are best.
2. Try clothes on. The comfortable clothes serve a dual purpose; they also allow you to try clothes on (over them) for an accurate fit. Personally I prefer not to buy something that doesn’t fit but some bloggers and vloggers disagree. Their rationale is if you like the print, you should buy the item but ONLY IF you can rework it later. I’m crafty but I don’t have no interest in sewing or reworking a garment. LOL. So, this one is up to you.
3. Expect to be there a few hours (at the least) if you want to increase your luck of finding something good.
4. Don’t forget to check out the accessories. Remember: everything old is new again. 😉 Bring socks, knee highs or peds to try on shoes.
5. Clean and/or wash everything you buy. I steamed my garments before taking them to the dry cleaner just to be safe.
